In sharing his own experience of cancer treatment, Craig Lustig, MPA, highlights the importance of recognizing the impact of cancer and its treatment on an individual’s emotional well-being, and encourages cancer survivors to seek psychosocial support to aid in their emotional healing along with physical healing.
Lustig further notes that the militaristic language used in discussing cancer often overlooks the painful, debilitating, exhausting, and even humiliating experiences of cancer patients. Like for “soldiers in a war,” Lustig suggests confronting the posttraumatic stress disorder that can accompany a patient’s own experience with cancer treatment.
